We’ve all seen them. Those golden hour family photos where everyone looks effortlessly coordinated. The colors flow, the textures complement each other, and nothing feels overly “matchy matchy.” (I still have a soft spot for the early 2000’s matching Christmas pajamas, but this is a different vibe.)

Choosing outfits for your photoshoot can be one of the most stressful yet important parts of planning your session. The right clothing is just as essential as location, lighting, and gear. As a Tucson family photographer, I have learned which colors and styles truly complement our Southwestern landscapes and can take your images from nice to absolutely stunning.

This guide is specifically curated for the unique tones, textures, and light of Southern Arizona and the Southwest. A photographer in New York might give completely different advice because their natural backdrops and lighting conditions are so different.

Your Style, Your Culture, Your Story

I want every client to feel celebrated and comfortable bringing their own culture and heritage into their photoshoot. If you have traditional garments, heirloom pieces, or cultural accessories that are meaningful to you, please wear them proudly. My sessions are a safe and welcoming space for all backgrounds, and I believe that incorporating your heritage into your outfit adds even more beauty and authenticity to your images.

A note: any clothing advice I give is purely suggestive. I believe in personal expression and identity. The clothes we wear tell a story without words, and I want your story to be authentically yours.

“What should I wear to my photoshoot?” is the question I hear most often. That is why I created a detailed 17 page style guide (I really wanted to use my graphic design degree) to take the guesswork out of the process. Inside, you will find my best family photoshoot outfit ideas for Southern Arizona, including color palettes, fabrics, patterns, and tips for coordinating outfits without losing your personal style. Want to make it even easier on yourself? Check out my client closet which is full of curated pieces you may wear for no extra charge.

5 Style Tips for Your Tucson, Arizona Photoshoot

1) Choose Colors that Harmonize with the Desert
Earth tones, warm neutrals, and muted pastels look incredible against Tucson’s golden lit desert. Think about the colors we see in nature here such as saguaro green, terracotta, cream, soft sky blues, and prickly pear purple.

2) Coordinate, Do Not Match
Gone are the days of identical white T shirts and blue jeans. Select a shared harmonious color palette and let each family member vary their tones and textures.

3) Layer for Texture, Interest, and Flexibility
Layers add depth and variety to your photos. Consider denim jackets, serapes, knit cardigans, dupattas, scarves, ponchos, pashminas, or other meaningful cultural garments. Layers also give you more posing options and styling variety throughout the shoot.

4) Avoid Distracting Patterns and Logos
Small and subtle prints and traditional Southwestern patterns work beautifully. Large logos, neon prints, and bold text can draw attention away from your faces, and you are the main character here.

5) Add Personal Touches
Accessories such as jewelry, hats, or belts can tie your look together. Props like musical instruments, books, or even pets can add a meaningful and personal element to your photos.

Overall, what is most important is that you show up comfortably and authentically. Wear what makes you feel like you. Whether that means embracing flowing earth tones, layering with a treasured cultural garment, or wearing your favorite pair of boots, the goal is for your photos to feel true to your story. When you feel confident and comfortable, that energy shines through in every image and creates photographs you and your loved ones will cherish for years to come.
