What to Wear for Maternity Photos in Tucson
If you’re wondering what to wear for maternity photos in Tucson, you’re not alone. Choosing the right outfit can make a huge difference in how your images feel. As a Tucson maternity photographer, I always want my clients to feel confident, elevated and timeless in whatever they choose to wear.
A Gentle Reminder
This guide is here to inspire you, not to limit you.
There is no single “correct” way to dress for maternity photos. These suggestions are simply meant to help you feel confident in the desert setting and understand what photographs beautifully in Tucson’s light.
The most important thing is that you wear something you genuinely love. Something that feels comfortable on your body. Something that makes you feel like yourself.
If you feel confident, it will show in your photos.
Whether that means a flowing gown, a fitted dress that highlights your bump, a cozy knit with jeans, or maybe nothing at all! It’s completely up to you.
Your maternity session is about celebrating yourself in this season. Your outfit should feel like an extension of who you are, not a costume

When you’re choosing what to wear to your maternity photoshoot, it is important to consider a few different details: color, pattern, texture, and silhouette.
These four elements make a huge difference in how your photos feel; whether you want your photos to be classic and timeless or maybe modern and trendy.
Let’s break it down:
Color:
The Tucson landscape is painted with warm neutrals, golden hues, and splashes of sunset. Choosing tones that harmonize with the natural landscape colors creates images that feel cohesive and elevated. Here are a few colors that compliment the Southern Arizona landscape beautifully:
Cream/Ivory/Beige
Rust/Burnt Orange
Sage Green
Burgundy
Plum
Dusty Rose
Chocolate
Deep Teal
Powder Blue
These shades can all be found naturally occurring in the landscapes around Southern Arizona so that feel cohesive and not overpowering.
Warm desert tones
I typically recommend avoiding neon hues (highlighter colors) and pure white as these tones can be very harsh and distracting. I also recommend avoiding bright oranges and reds because they can create a color cast on yourself and other subjects near you.
Patterns:
Patterns should enhance your look without overpowering it.
Small, subtle patterns photograph beautifully. The desert already has lots of visual texture so sometimes simpler patterns make you as the subject stand out best.
I recommend avoiding “mixing biomes”. For example: if your photoshoot is in the desert then a tropical floral print would clash with the desert fauna. Try a subtle floral or a western print like paisley instead.
Texture:
Fabric texture can really elevate your maternity photos. Choosing flowing fabrics create a beautiful ethereal feeling, dramatic tulle dresses add a flair of drama. Here are some recommended fabric textures:
Chiffon
Tulle
Linen
Silk
Knit/crochet
Lace
Denim
I recommend ditching stiff “business casual” type textures.
Silhouette:
Silhouette can really shape the emotional feeling of your photos. Fitted dresses will highlight your bump and create an empowered, intimate look. Empire waist robes or flowing gowns create a more soft, ethereal look. Both are absolutely beautiful…it just depends on the emotion you want to convey. When choosing a silhouette ask yourself:
Do I feel confident in this?
Can I move comfortably?
Does this feel like me?
Your comfort will translate in your photos and dictate the poses you can do.
How to coordinate with your partner
Couple’s maternity photoshoot at sunset in complementary warm burgundy tones.
If your partner is joining your maternity session, coordination matters more than matching. You don’t need to wear identical colors head to toe. Instead, think complementary desert-inspired colors that feel cohesive together.
For example:
If you’re wearing cream, your partner could wear tan, sage, or soft blue
If you’re wearing a floral pattern, your partner could wear a solid color
If you’re wearing a textured lace gown, your partner could wear a linen button down
The goal is the balance.
Encourage your partner to:
Stick to neutral or earth tones
Avoid heavy logos or graphic tees
Choose natural fiber fabrics over athletic or synthetic materials
Match your level of formality
Most importantly, both of you should fee comfortable. When outfits coordinate naturally, your connection becomes the focal point…not the clothing.
If you’re still unsure how to pair together, I am more than happy to help style both of you in a way that feels authentic to your story, and compliments the surrounding Tucson landscapes. Contact me.
